The Ultimate Machu Picchu Packing List: What to Wear in Machu Picchu

Tip: Pack Light

If you’re traveling to Machu Picchu by rail, prepare to take only the essentials with you as most rail companies restrict travelers to 11 pounds worth of belongings. I didn’t see anyone have their luggage weighed, but people were limited to “carry-on” style bags and backpacks. If you plan to travel with a larger back, the rail companies (PeruRail and Inca Rail) offer solutions for bag storage, as do many of the hotels in Cusco and the Sacred Valley.

Machu Picchu Clothing Essentials

  • Layered Clothing – As with any location at altitude, the weather in Machu Picchu changes frequently and quickly. Plan to wear a t-shirt as a base layer with long sleeves and jacket options on top to stay warm.

  • Light Weight Jacket – I’ve been a big proponent of the Patagonia Nano Puff for years, and I must admit there’s no better jacket for Machu Picchu. This lightweight puffer packs down wonderfully and fits in just about any day pack you could think of.

  • Comfortable Pants – Comfort is the name of the game while visiting Machu Picchu. I wore leggings and linen pants to the site and found both were comfortable options, though the leggings were better for climbing the higher circuits (1 and 2). The linen pants transitioned well for meals and evenings exploring the town of Aguas Calientes.

  • Rain Jacket – We lucked out during our early May trip and avoided any rain on our visit to Machu Picchu, but the group our tour guide took the week prior wasn’t so lucky. Plan to pack a rain jacket with you for your trip. I love my North Face raincoat (I’ve had it for over 10 years now!), but there are plenty of affordable options on Amazon and beyond.

  • Hiking Socks – Regardless of brand, hiking socks are a must-pack for Machu Picchu. Look for lightweight options to prevent blisters or icky foot sweat while visiting the ruins.

  • Lounge Wear – Outside of visiting the ruins, there are plenty of restaurants, shops, and sights to explore in town. I highly recommend having a change of clothes to wear in the evening to maximize comfort. I even packed an outfit to switch into on the train back down after our second entrance to Machu Picchu to refresh after our exploration.

Machu Picchu Footwear

  • Hiking Shoes – Machu Picchu will go down in my memories as the death site for my beloved Altra Timp 2’s (Shop similar options here). I highly recommend a traditional hiking boot or trail running shoe for Mach Picchu as the terrain can be rugged or slippery after rain.

  • Sandals – I always have a pair of easy-to-pack sandals on hand for walking around hotels for dinner or evening drinks. This pair from Amazon didn’t take up too much space (or weight) in my bag.

Accessories, Toiletries and Gear for Machu Picchu

  • First Aid Kit & Blister Bandages – As always with adventure, it's important to prepare for anything. I love this weekend first aid kit, and I also throw in a few blister protectors as well.

  • Small Day Pack or Belt Bag – I found it best to carry just a small belt bag (my Lululemon one, to be specific) during my visit to Machu Picchu. Time at the archeological site is limited to 3 hours and food is restricted, so I felt the need to only have a few essentials like my passport, some cash, and tissues with me. Plan to have a fanny back or small draw string bag in your luggage to take to the site.

  • Sunscreen – Being at altitude means you’ll be closer to the sun, so be sure to pack SPF protection for your visit to Machu Picchu. I’m a huge fan of Sun Bum, available at most drug stores and on Amazon.

  • Reusable Water Bottle – Plastic water bottles are not permitted at Machu Picchu, so plan to have a reusable water bottle on hand for your visit. My favorites are this one from Simple Modern and the good ‘ole HydroFlask.

  • Medications – Machu Picchu is at elevation, and travelers (including myself) opted to take medication to reduce the impacts. Consult the CDC webpage and consider visiting a doctor before traveling to determine what you need for your trip. You can learn more about my experience at the travel clinic and using Diamox in my blog post (Spoiler Alert: It wasn't pretty.

  • Kleenex/Bath Tissue & Hand Sanitizer – The bathrooms at Machu Picchu are known to be a bit hit and miss, and the restrooms at Ollytaytambo had no bathroom supplies whatsoever. You’ve been warned.

Tech, Gadgets, & Essentials for Macchu Picchu

  • Phone or Camera – This seems like a no-brainer, but make sure to have your phone and camera ready and charged so that you can capture your memories.

  • External Charger – Photo-taking drains batteries like none other. Bring a backup battery or external charger as an insurance policy. My favorite is available on Amazon

  • Passport – Machu Picchu requires the presentation of a passport to enter the site. You’ll also present your passport to the bus service before boarding. Don’t miss your time slot and come prepared with your passport on-hand.
